The National Union of Worker Producers’ Cooperatives in Bulgaria (NUWPC) is an integrated part of the Bulgarian cooperative movement – one of the oldest in Europe, with long traditions and deep roots in society. The first cooperative in Bulgaria was created in 1890 in the village of Mirkovo. The NUWPC originates from the Union of Crafts Producers’ Cooperatives, established in 1919. NUWPC was created as a General Union of Worker Producers’ and Crafts’ Cooperatives in 1950, renamed into Central Union of Worker Producers’ Cooperatives in 1953 and into National (Central) Union of Worker Producers’ Cooperatives in 1998; into National Union of Worker Producers’ Cooperatives in 2000, by the Ninth Congress of the Union.
